FMA President Speaks on Free Trade Agreements

November 9, 2017

FMA President, Bob Ballantyne spoke on Canada’s existing and possible free trade agreements at the Canada Logistics Conference in Montreal on October 26.

This annual event of the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation (CITT) drew several hundred supply chain, logistics and transportation practitioners to update and broaden their supply chain knowledge.

Bob reported on the 14 free trade agreements that Canada has in place that cover 44 nations.  “The agreements are with countries in all parts of the world and provide a strong foundation to grow global trade for Canadian companies”, he stated. He focused much of his remarks on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the 28 countries in the European Union, which came into force on September 21, and on NAFTA, which is currently under renegotiation with the U.S. and Mexico.  He noted that there are possible clouds on the trade horizon, with the uncertainty over the future of NAFTA and the UK withdrawal from the EU.  He also outlined other FTAs currently under discussion, including the renewed discussions on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

The slides that Bob used to provide details on the various agreements can be found here.
